Lav Diaz in Bangkok

Filipino indie director Lav Diaz is in Bangkok for Death in the Land of Melancholia: Lav Diaz Retrospective in Thailand, which began yesterday at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center.

The two-hour rough cut of his long-in-the-works Heremias Book II was screened, followed by a question-and-answer session with Diaz and Filipino film critic Alexis Tioseco, taking questions from organizer Film Sick, Bioscope's Graiwoot Chulphongsathorn and translation by May Adadol Ingawanij.

The retrospective, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, or perhaps anywhere -- not even the Philippines has put together an event like this for Diaz's films -- continues today with Melancholia at noon at the BACC. On Sunday at Bangkok Code it's Death in the Land of Encantos. Next weekend at the Conference of Birds gallery, there's Evolution of a Filipino Family (starting at 10am) and Heremias Book I.

Additionally, a new venue has been added for the retrospective -- the Film Archive's (new website!) Sri Salaya cinema in Salaya, Nakhon Pathom. It'll show Diaz's films every Monday in August from 10am.

The full schedule and more about the films can be found at Bangkok Cinema Scene.
